The Office of the Dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is looking to fill an inaugural position: Director of Marketing. The Director is responsible for the marketing strategy that brings the Arts & Sciences priorities to life via creative storytelling and delivery of A&S initiatives, accomplishments and research across all channels to engage our core audiences. They will work closely with the other Directors on the Marketing leadership team and will be closely aligned with the strategic objectives of Arts & Sciences.

This role will initially serve as an individual contributor and will be responsible for both the strategic vision as well as the executional/tactical elements. There is an opportunity to build out this team further in the future. It’s vital that this person is both a leader and a doer. This individual will report to the Senior Associate Dean and Chief Marketing Officer.

Specifically, They Will Have Ownership Of The Following

  • Overseeing overall marketing and brand strategy: taking the A&S priorities and translating those into overarching campaigns, content and events that are synced across all teams
  • Owning and measuring audience insights, data and analytics across all audiences (faculty, staff, alumni, parents, students, prospective students, broader University) and building appropriate strategies to engage
  • Establish brand identity across all touchpoints and developing materials to support
  • Create and implement process to measure campaign effectiveness and engagement
  • Create annual master calendar that syncs up cadence of marketing campaigns and events throughout the year, and proactively manage and optimize
  • Develop project and creative briefs for campaign execution; lead strong relationships internally and with external agencies as needed to create impactful campaigns
  • Managing and executing events of various sizes and audiences
  • Partner with other Directors to counsel senior leadership on strategies, initiatives and materials to amplify key priorities
  • Developing and executing social media strategy
  • In coordination with other members of the Marketing team, be astute to the broader community and ensure that messages are amplified in an appropriate way and tone
  • Develop and recommend results-based process improvements and optimized communication channels, tools, and strategies and be able to pivot and lead team through change management
  • Identify and recommend new marketing opportunities, supported by data and insights
  • Coordinate closely with content and internal communications teams to ensure campaign messaging and collateral are on-brand
  • Builds external facing marketing strategies to engage with audiences and represent Arts & Sciences brand and priorities in a meaningful way
  • Point for College Foundation, University Advancement, and University Foundation relations

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience: At least eight years, or Master’s degree with at least six years of marketing, journalism, or public relations experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed capacity across Arts & Sciences, the University, and broader audiences
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire others and affect change
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with ability to synthesize complex concepts and translate into simple and clear communications and campaigns
  • Advanced Degree may substitute for some of the experience requirement
  • Experience envisioning, developing, and implementing a successful strategic marketing plan based on goals and priorities
  • Proven track record creating and delivering effective plans that translate strategic thinking into output
  • Strong knowledge of best-in-class marketing and audience practices
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills and strong problem solving capabilities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience in higher education or working with high profile leadership teams

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. A hybrid work schedule may be available, dependent upon the needs of the department and the incumbent’s performance.
