he Assistant Director works closely with student staff to create compelling training and empowers students to unleash their creativity via their chosen medium. The Assistant Director guides students as they learn and develop both their media and interpersonal skills. This position advises an entertainment network and supervises three student employees. The director and assistant director work closely to chart the department’s progress and envision its future.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Designs and implements a comprehensive multimedia training curriculum for student volunteers across print, broadcast, and digital media
- Provides direct, high-quality advising support to UABtv. Provides advising support on digital production to the Kaleidoscope and Aura Literary Arts Review as needed
- Manages all equipment inventory and ensures compliance with departmental and University equipment use policies
- Assists director in visioning and strategic planning for the department, including developing student-learning outcomes, and oversees ongoing, comprehensive assessment of Student Media and all related programming, education, and activities
- Monitors trends in media and remains current on best practices for convergent media and social media
- Recruits, hires, and supervises the Student Production Manager, Social Media Manager, DJ staff, and other student staff as needed
- Monitors and reports organization progress to the Director
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with local media outlets and departmental service providers
- Assists in collecting, analyzing, and reporting information to be used for university-level reports or briefings. Assists in preparing and editing various annual and periodic reports and proposals as well as relevant sections of various institutional, division, and department publications
- Provides relative data in reference to Student Life on campus that can be used for assessment and decision-making
- Performs other duties as assigned
Annual Salary: $48,500-$55,000
Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
We are looking for someone with scholastic media advising experience (collegiate level preferred). Candidates with collegiate media experience are also preferred. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, specifically After Effects, Illustrator, and Audition, will assist in this role. Candidates that have student club/organization advising experience would also be preferred. Professional media experience in broadcast, radio or digital media should be considered.
