Job Summary

The Social Media Specialist I coordinates web design and social media communications for The Water School consistent with guidelines and initiatives set forward by University Marketing & Communications. This position is responsible for developing websites for both internal and external audiences and for aligning social media stories and postings with student and community interests. The Social Media Specialist I works closely with the Manager of Community Engagement and Communications to integrate web design and social media campaigns that focus on FGCU’s five-county service region.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Manages the design and development of websites and social media presence that supports the mission of The Water School.
  • Provides creative leadership in generating original ideas for marketing and social media strategies that achieve strategic goals, ensure that designs follow university branding guidelines, and are in-line with appropriate audiences and timelines.
  • Ensures that websites and social media content are maintained and up to date; works closely with University Marketing & Communications to the evaluate overall impact.
  • Builds relationships with The Water School faculty, staff, and students to capture photos and videos for use on websites and social media content.
  • Coordinates print and electronic publications including newsletters, brochures, invitations, flyers, and announcements.
  • Stays current with new technical developments in social media and social media platforms and promotes best practices, as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

  • This position requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of professional full-time experience in marketing, public relations, social media, or website development.
  • Work experience in higher education.
  • Experience with publishing, imaging, or graphics software (e.g., FrontPage, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, InDesign, Dreamweaver).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the position.
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies and communication principles.
  • Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Knowledge and experience designing, implementing and assessing the effectiveness of marketing strategies and promotional materials.
  • Knowledge of and ability to post photographs to various social media sites.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize and implement video, broadcast production techniques and standards, branding and marketing principles.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in use of publishing and design software
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
