The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) brings together more than four decades of innovative and life-saving research on vaccines and infectious diseases. (http://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/cvd/) As an organized research center within the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), CVD comprises a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff whose primary mission is to develop, evaluate, and implement vaccines and other interventions to reduce illness and mortality domestically and in less developed countries. CVD has been front and center in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic by conducting high profile clinical and epidemiologic research and participating in educational and policy activities. At CVD, we work to prevent and treat enteric and respiratory diseases, to reduce the threat of malaria and antimicrobial resistance, and to identify, understand and combat other tropic and emerging pathogens burdening low resource settings. Training is a critical component of our work to ensure the foundation for the next generation of scientists and researchers committed to our mission.

The CVD is seeking a Senior Marketing/Media Relations Specialist to join our team to lead strategic communication, partnerships, and outreach with local communities and organizations while promoting the research, programs, events, and clinical trials at the CVD. This position will be divided between CVD and the School of Medicine’s Office of Public Affairs & Communications. Half of the responsibilities include marketing and recruiting for clinical trials for CVD. This includes designing, managing, implementing, and tracking automated digital and direct marketing recruitment campaigns for clinical trials, including enhanced SEO optimization designs and geo-fencing with targeted advertising. The other half of the job involves preparing press releases, newsletters, and web materials for CVD as well as handling media outreach for important initiatives. Our ideal candidate would have both media relations/public relations experience as well as experience with marketing and recruiting for clinical trials including targeted advertising on social media. Strong writing skills required. This position qualifies for a University of Maryland Baltimore hybrid position which would allow for work-from-home up to 2 days a week.

Primary Duties

  • Recommends and implements strategies to achieve marketing and recruitment goals for the department or school.
  • Collaborates with CVD leadership, program/clinical staff to develop effective, creative, and innovative strategies to market various initiatives, programs, or services for the university with a strong focus on successful clinical trial recruitment campaigns. Ensures each user/department is informed of communication and marketing effort by attending internal and external meetings.
  • Designs, manages, implements, and tracks automated digital and direct marketing recruitment campaigns for clinical trials, including enhanced SEO optimization designs and geo-fencing with targeted advertising.
  • Ensures all UMB and IRB policies and procedures are followed.
  • Prepares press releases and marketing information for social media and communication distribution and manages media relations activities on behalf of CVD in conjunction with the Office of Public Affairs & Communications. Ensures department or school image is positively maintained.
  • Designs and updates website, creates newsletters, maintains intranet, etc.
  • Produces informational items such as brochures, direct mail, and advertising to promote the department or school.
  • Tracks metrics associated with communication strategies and ensures accurate and up-to-date enterprise protection of documents and security passwords as well as maintains updated contacts for research and community partnership initiatives.
  • Works closely with the CVD leadership team to develop outreach strategies to engage community partners and supporters.
  • Prepares annual reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor’s degree. Degree in marketing, advertising, communications, journalism, or related field of study is preferred.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or media, public, or client relations.

Other: Related experience may be substituted for education.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to communicate complicated scientific concepts to a general audience in an innovative and result-oriented way. Outstanding design, writing, editing, and social skills required. Video content and editing skills preferred. Excellent customer service and relationship-building skills (internal and external).

Hiring Range: $67,000 – $80,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
