For the first time ever, Florida State University (FSU) is searching for a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). This newly created position will report directly to the President and will collaborate with academic and administrative leaders to provide overall vision and strategic leadership to all university marketing. To help realize all its goals, FSU seeks a marketing expert and leader who will leverage FSU’s many strengths to create, implement, and maintain a clear, coordinated, and unique brand strategy that targets internal and external stakeholders and elevates the University to new heights in national and international distinction.
The successful candidate will bring an inclusive and facilitative leadership style that inspires and empowers staff, encourages open communication and collaboration across campus, and fosters innovation. Collaborating with talented and dedicated staff within the Office of Communications, as well as faculty and administrative leaders across campus, this leader will forge and implement a clear, unified vision for FSU’s marketing that will spark life-long engagement with current and prospective audiences and stakeholders and position the University for future success.

Reporting directly to President Richard McCullough, the newly created position of CMO will serve on FSU’s Leadership Team. In partnership with the head of University Communications, the CMO will forge, implement, and manage holistic, high-level, and multi-faceted marketing and brand strategies that highlight FSU’s many assets and ensures FSU is consistently, accurately, effectively, inclusively, and more proactively communicating content that enhances the recognition of the uniqueness of FSU’s community and supports the University’s mission, vision, and strategic goals.
Working with academic and administrative leaders throughout FSU, the CMO will provide leadership and vision for all internal and external marketing activities for FSU, including institutional branding, advancement marketing, admission marketing, social media, and web development.
The CMO will lead a team of talented marketing professionals, in addition to outside freelance and agency contractors, and will work with marketing and communications efforts in Admissions/Enrollment, Institutional Advancement, Athletics, University Communications, and leaders across campus to develop a clear, unified vision and direction in how best to target and proactively engage specific external and internal audiences, including prospective and current students, board members, parents, alumni, donors, faculty and staff, the academic community, and industry leaders across a range of digital, print, and associated platforms, to include FSU websites, as well as all social media platforms and all facets of the University’s online presence.
This individual will be tasked with elevating FSU’s brand and communicating its story and impressive trajectory to the world at large, with strategies that reflect the University as a whole, while celebrating the unique strengths and histories of its 18 independent colleges, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, branch campuses in both Panama City, FL and the Republic of Panama, Athletic excellence, and its enduring legacy and partnership with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. This will include the invigoration of past practices with fresh, creative, bold tactics, and the modernization of modes of communication, creating integrated campaigns and targeted strategies designed to better market content that supports university goals and reflects the FSU of today and the future.
All of this shall be accomplished with a high level of professionalism and integrity, a transparent, team-oriented, and collaborative style, a demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, a passion for the mission of FSU, and a commitment to identifying and embracing opportunities for change that will move the University forward.
The successful candidate will be an inclusive, collaborative, transparent, and action-oriented leader with the professional experience and leadership style to inspire respect for a common vision within the marketing and communications teams, and throughout the campus community. This leader will have demonstrated ability in developing and executing successful results-based marketing, advertising, and brand management campaigns and strategies, with ten or more years of relevant marketing experience, in positions of increasing responsibility, and at least eight years in a supervisory or senior management capacity.
The CMO will have the interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills to navigate a decentralized, constantly evolving, mission-driven enterprise and the variety of cultures and business practices such an enterprise sustains. They will be secure personally and able to harness the strength of others to keep the organization focused on the University’s goals, objectives, and priorities. This leader will achieve and sustain an optimal balance of robust central services and standards, center-led innovation, and local innovation, and will succeed through their subject-matter expertise, influence, business acumen, relationship skills, and results. They will be someone who partners readily on the basis of a shared understanding of institutional priorities and fiscal realities.
The ideal candidate will be politically savvy and have a track record of success exercising diplomacy while navigating complex environments. The CMO should also have the values and a demonstrated record that allows them to build on the University’s deep commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and justice, through actions that further these values.
